A Burlington Township woman is in critical condition after a multi-vehicle crash in Mercer County on Sunday. Authorities say the woman who was driving southbound on Route 29 in a Toyota Highlander veered into oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes and crashed head-on with a Jeep Gladiator.

The impact forced the Gladiator into the middle lane, where a Jeep Cherokee rear-ended it. Both vehicles flipped multiple times before coming to rest. The Gladiator’s engine caught fire, and an unknown good Samaritan pulled the unconscious driver from the burning vehicle. The driver was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for his injuries and later released. Police said the Cherokee driver escaped on his own.

First responders had to extricate the Gladiator driver, who was also taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center with multiple fractures and life-threatening injuries. She remains in critical condition.

Authorities have not yet determined if alcohol or other factors caused the woman to veer into oncoming traffic. The Trenton Police Department and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Serious Collision Response Team are investigating.

Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of car accidents due to the high force of impact. Head-on collisions often result in severe injuries or fatalities from extreme deceleration and crushing forces. Critical injuries are further amplified when vehicles flip or catch fire.
